Excessive daytime sleep regularly may be an early symptom of Dementia. If you are the one, you may be more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease as per the latest research.
According to the research study published on 17th March 2022, it is trigger warning for people to pay closer attention to their lifestyle changes. As you age, you need to look back the coming changes in your sleeping habits, especially if it is becoming a routine.
The findings from the study is to make people pay closer attention to their sleeping routine especially during the day. And if it is becoming longer everyday?
This study included greater than 40% older adults who are likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease in case they regularly take nap and snooze for longer than an hour. If they are patients with this disease, it is like to have an increase with every passing day.
As per the study author, Peng Li, PhD, in the article, we normally ignore the daytime sleep behavior of adults. The results coming not only suggest one being at an elevated risk of the disease. Instead, this can be an unfavorable clinical progression, Dr. Li continued.
Napping becomes a common change in lifestyle as soon as the person age along with the greater frequency of awakening for urination. As per the study carried out every year, the duration of daytime nap increase by 11 minutes.
There comes a difference as those who are about to get diagnosed with Alzheimer disease, the nap time increases thrice, i.e. with an average increase of 68 minutes.
The connection between taking a nap during the daytime and dementia still exist even when the researchers accounted for quality and quantity of sleep. Even if there is a variation in the amount or quality of sleep, especially in the nighttime awakenings, it do not affect the relationship between napping and dementia.
Limitations of the study
Although this was a deep analysis, this is not a gold standard for measuring the quality and quantity of sleep. This is our limitation to this study. Having used these devices helps scientist in tracking movement, making them assume long stretches. The device also says when there is no movement, this indicates their nap time. But this could also be reading or television time for people.
Another disadvantage for the study is that it do not have the ability to reflect what would happen to the younger adults. The study has covered adult with 74+ age.
According to Dr. Li, this study needs people to pay greater attention towards 24-hours sleep pattern. This helps in finding out if the napping is truly an early symptom of dementia.
