According to the doctors, it is recommended to drink at least 12 glass water in a day to max four liters. This is not any rule of thumb that you want to consume water in a glass always. Instead, one can hydrate the body by having water consumed in food as well. But what happens when we drink too much water?

Water plays a vital role in our lives. But is it good to drink as much water as you want? I don’t think so!

When you intake an excess amount of water, the kidneys fail to filter out that is then accumulated in the body cells. This ultimately results in swelling in the body cells.

Our body cells are surrounded by a sodium and water-balanced solution and when you drink a lot of water, it disturbs the balance, leading towards the depletion of sodium level, causing hyponatremia. When it is acute hyponatremia, this leads to several health conditions including brain diseases, seizure, coma, and even death.

Whatever you do in excess is counted. This means when you drink too much, this may lead over hydration. And the excess amount of water may not be stored in the kidneys, arising the risk attached to water being accumulated in the body cells. Thereby, resulting in swelling of body cells.

  • Retention of more water

There are several health conditions that does not allow the kidneys to excrete the quantity of water in excess. This ultimately results in greater water retention in the body. Some of the health conditions include, kidney diseases, uncontrolled diabetes, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, liver diseases, etc.

How much water should you drink in a day?

The answer to this question depends on one person to the other. Some of the factors that should be considered include: activity level, age, sex, health conditions, etc. No one in the world can help you count the optimum water intake.

According to some of the researchers, it is healthy for an adult to drink 9 to 13 glass of water, i.e. 78 to 100 ounces. Drinking water in access is really harmful.

Symptoms of being overhydrated

Obviously, you can keep track record of how many glass of water you had in a day. But sometimes our body needs more while the other times less. So how would you be able to judge if you are taking in a healthy quantity? Below are some of the symptoms to help find if you are overhydrated;

  • Overhydration; Colorless urine and in limited amount
  • Properly hydrated; lemonade color urine
  • Dark yellow; Not hydrated

Over hydration may not be recognized at a very early stage. But if continues, this may result in headache, nausea, noticeable differences in mental state.

How to treat overhydration?

When your body gets too much water, you should consult your medical advisor in the first stance. Although water is the main source of life, drinking it overly can also harm you. So treat it by reducing the intake of fluid, optimizing the sodium level, and all those other things that doctors may have suggested.
