Southern Gas Company Sui (SSGC) on Tuesday denied reports it had plans to extend the duration of the gas load shedding to 18 hours from October 15.

The SSGC described the graphic posted on social media as “fake news” and said a gas management plan was being developed; however, postponed.

Speaking to Geo News, Minister of State for Petroleum Musadiq Malik clarified that no plans have been announced yet. However, the relevant authorities have been instructed to develop strategies to ensure supply during cooking times “by all means”.

He said planning by the SSGC was ongoing, adding that turning off the gas during the mealtimes in the winter season, as in previous years, was unacceptable.

Malik had previously warned of a severe gas crisis in the coming winter, saying the government would “try to provide gas at breakfast and meals”.

“To meet Sui Northern’s domestic gas demand, 95mmcfd will be required, but only 68mmcfd will be available in winter. While we have a similar situation for Sui Southern consumers,” said the Minister of State.

Faced with such a situation, Malik said the government would try to make gas available only to consumers during meals.

The Minister of State also said the government would import an additional 20,000 tons of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).

“We are developing a comprehensive winter gas distribution plan and will announce it soon,” he added.
