Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said Sunday the country’s dependence on food imports had increased as a result of recent devastating floods that have destroyed millions of areas of ready crops.

The prime minister said in a tweet that an agricultural country like Pakistan would also need to import food to make up for this loss. Today he stressed that World Food Day underscores the importance of comprehensive global initiatives to ensure food security in countries around the world.

Natural disasters from climate change and soaring prices on world markets threaten to further exacerbate an already stringent global shortage of nutritious food, the prime minister added.
