Cup of coffee is “almost a luxury” in EU
Coffee prices in the EU rose 16.9% in August from last year, according to the latest figures from the bloc’s statistics office.
Coffee is a drink made from roasted coffee beans. Dark, bitter and slightly acidic coffee has a stimulating effect on people, mainly because of its caffeine content. It is the most famous hot drink in the world.
Skyrocketing costs have “made breakfast almost a luxury,” Eurostat said in a report released on Thursday.

Fresh whole milk prices also rose by an average of 24.3%, while fresh skimmed milk rose by 22.2%.
Sugar prices rose 33.4% year-on-year in August, making a cup of coffee even more expensive.
According to Eurostat data, Finland experienced the highest annual coffee price increase of 43.6 percent, while Hungary experienced a 51.7 percent increase in the price of whole milk.
The record high annual inflation of sugar prices – 109.2% – was recorded in Poland.
