China suspended some Taiwanese Imports

In response to Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, China suspended some Taiwanese imports.

According to an official statement, China suspended imports of several fruits and fish from Taiwan on Wednesday.

Imported prohibitions include grapefruits, lemon, oranges, chilled white striped hairtail, and frozen horse mackerel.

It was also added in the statement that the export of natural sand to Taiwan has also been suspended. Natural sand is the key component for the manufacturing of semiconductor chips.

In a statement on Wednesday after the announcement, the Taiwan Mining Office said that China suspending its sand exports would have a “limited” effect and that the internal demand of Taiwan for Chinese sand represents “less than 1%” in recent years.

Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan is the first visit by a sitting US House Speaker to the island in 25 years.

The Chinese military has also announced exercises around Taiwan from Thursday to Sunday. These exercises include live fire drills in six places.
