Cerave moisturizing lotion & cream for face

Cerave Moisturizing Lotion & Cream For Face- US vs EU

I did a review on these two moisturizers, Cerave moisturizing lotion & cream for face and I have been using them for a while now. I have been using them for a long time, and now I do have a formed opinion on them.

Let’s get started with the moisturizing lotion. I’m going to go through, of course, claims, ingredients and their characteristics, all that good stuff. I’m going to compare it to the US version, because, as you know we do have different products in the world. You don’t have the same product in every country. So the bottom line is that I wanted to compare this version to the US version.

CeraVe Moisturizing Lotion EU

This is a moisturizing lotion meant for dry to very dry skin. That is what is written on the packaging here. And right away, I have to disagree with that claim because it wasn’t enough for my dry skin.

The Ingredients are actually very good. It includes humectants, glycerin, hyaluronic acid, and a lot of Emollient ingredients. The most important ingredients here are the ceramides. This cream has three ceramides.

**Ceramides are lipids that are naturally found in our skin, in the stratum corneum of the skin. These are very good ingredients to be found in a moisturizer. These are the so-called skin-identical ingredients.

Alongside, It also comprises three ceramides, cholesterol which is another lipid that is naturally found in our skin, and phytosphingosine (this is another type of lipid that is found in the top layer of the skin naturally). These are great skin-identical ingredients needed and loved by the skin.

Most importantly, this product does not have fragrance. Some of you will be happy that it does not have alcohol. The most important thing here is that this product does not have a fragrance that is very important for people with sensitive skin. It is also great for people who are using retinoids, because retinoids do increase the sensitivity of the skin. For example, happens to me whenever I’m using retinoids, my skin becomes sensitive to fragrance products. I was really happy when I saw that dairy products do not have a fragrance at all.

No alcohol, No fragrance.

I would like to add another thing, no parabens. In case you mind parabens, you can free to go. And one more thing I would like to mention regarding the ingredients. This moisturizing lotion, does have a couple of comedogenic ingredients, and below is the list;

  • Cetearyl alcohol 2*
  • Cetyl alcohol 2*
  • Polyglyceryl- 3-
  • Diisostearate 4*
  • Ceteareth-20 2*

As you can see, most of them are not highly comedogenic ingredients. But there’s this one ingredient that is a little bit more than the rest, namely polyglyceryl-3-Diisostearate 4*. So if you are actually acne-prone or prone to clog pores. This moisturizing lotion did not cause me any breakouts at all.

Characteristics

With regards to the characteristics, this lotion is very lightweight and spreads out really easily. And it’s not very occlusive. That’s why the claim that it’s meant for dry to very dry skin is misleading because I have dry skin and it’s not moisturizing enough for me and not inclusive enough for me. I do like using occlusive creams to stop the transepidermal water loss so it’s not going to be a moisturizer that you just apply one layer is enough and you’re good to go.

But this lotion is going to be good as the base before using retinoids so start slowly. If you want to avoid the irritations, i.e. just first apply a lightweight moisturizer, absorb completely, and then apply retinoids on top.

Retinoids will be able to penetrate your skin and the irritations will be minimized because you will have prepared your skin with this moisturizing lotion. Because you will have less irritation if you apply a lightweight moisturizer and then retinoids, instead of when you just applied retinoids straight to your face, like, chances are that you will get some irritation if you do it that way.

Bottomline

This moisturizing lotion is a great base for retinoids and it will also be great for anyone who has normal skin and does not like those heavy moisturizers. I would even recommend it to people with oily skin because of how lightweight it is. The only problem is that one highly comedogenic iningredient hat doesn’t cause a problem for me. But if you are prone to clogged pores, it might cause a problem for you.

On the whole, I think that people with normal skin, oily skin can give it a go. And if you need a lightweight moisturizer to put as a base before using a retinol cream, then this is it.

Cerave Moisturizing Lotion EU VS Cerave Moisturizing Lotion US

I did compare them side by side. I compared the ingredients only because I don’t have it here. But if you want to send me, I am happy with it ^-^.

Here’s what I found from the ingredients.

  • Skin types

Firstly,  Cerave Moisturizing Lotion US version has more appropriate claims that it’s meant for normal to dry skin, not dry to very dry like in EU version. I think that is true and that is what I said “This is more for normal skin”.

  • Ingredients

Another thing, ceramides are listed higher in the US version, ingredients in the ingredients list are listed by the concentration in the product. So the first ingredient listed is the one that has the highest concentration. And the last ingredient listed is the one that has the lowest concentration in the product. In the US version, I saw that the serum is listed higher. This could indicate that the US version is more moisturizing and that it does have a richer texture.

So if you’re reading from USA and if you have been using this moisturizing lotion, let me know if you have been using this product, let me know your thoughts about the characteristics. This will also help out other readers.

  • US version has parabens as preservatives.

In case you are against parabens, be mindful of that.

  • US version actually has low molecular hyaluronic acid

EU version has just regular high molecular hyaluronic acid. That is a huge difference if you ask me, because you know how much I love low molecular hyaluronic acid. Low molecular hyaluronic acid is the best thing as it plumps up the fine lines.

Comparatively to high molecular hyaluronic acid because the high molecular hyaluronic acid can hydrate just the outermost layer of the skin, it is considered a better thing. The low molecular hyaluronic acid goes deeper and just hydrates from within and plumps up the fine lines.

All of these differences do indicate that US version could be better.

Cerave Moisturizing Cream

The EU version of moisturizing cream also has the same claim. It’s meant for dry, very dry skin. I disagree with the claim again.

Now, regarding the ingredients, it has pretty similar ingredients to the moisturizing lotion.

It has the ceramides, identical ingredients, glycerin, hyaluronic acid, emollients, and it’s fragrance free. That’s all great. And again, it does not have parabens either.

Also, regarding the comedogenic ingredients (Cetearyl alcohol 2*, Cetyl alcohol 2*, Ceteareth- 20 2*), this cream does have one less comedogenic ingredient in comparison to the moisturizing lotion.

This product did not cause me any problems, did not give me any breakouts. But that’s just my personal experience.

** I have to warn you that it does have a few comedogenic ingredients.

Difference between Cerave moisturizing cream & lotion for face

The difference between the Cerave Moisturizing Lotion & Cream for face is that this moisturizing cream has petrolatum or Vaseline, and the moisturizing lotion does not.

** Vaseline is a byproduct of refined crude oil. That’s why some people don’t like it, especially people who like using organic natural oils, etc.

But you either love it or hate it, you cannot deny that petrol item as is a very occlusive agent and it’s probably the best occlusive agents out there. It stops the transparent dermal water loss, which is very important if you have dry skin. I personally do like products that have Vaseline in them because they form those occlusive layers and they stop to transepidermal water loss and they protect my skin. And that is very important if you have dry skin.

I do like that this cream has petrolatum and based on this ingredient, we might assume that this cream is more moisturizing than the lotion.

And unfortunately, I have to disappoint you. It’s really not that more moisturizing. Characteristics are different because this cream is thicker than the lotion, but it still spreads out easily and it absorbs fast and it leaves a very matte finish. It does not give you a glossy finish.

There is just no that occlusive effect. There is no that occlusive layer, or at least I cannot feel it on my skin at all. So, again, this cream was not moisturizing enough for me, not rich enough for me. Again, I find the claims misleading and I think that this cream is going to be more suited for someone with normal skin or even oily skin, because it’s really not greasy, not heavy, not inclusive, or anything.

So if you’re into those lightweight moisturizing creams, then these two products are definitely for you. And again, this cream as well can be used as a base for retinoids.  You can apply this cream first, wait until it’s absorbed and your face is less matte. Right after that, you can go in with your retinoid cream.

That’s all!

Cerave Moisturizing Cream EU VS Cerave Moisturizing Cream US

Cerave moisturizing lotion & cream for face

Believe it or not, these two do not have many differences. Again, USA version has Ceramides listed higher in the ingredients list and the EU version again has ceramides listed very low in the ingredients list. This indicates that the US version is more moisturizing and richer and texture. Everything else is the same.

Also, there are no parabens in the US version, which is great. So if you are against parabens, you can get the moisturizing cream. And again, the US version does not have low molecular hyaluronic acid. That’s only in the moisturizing lotion and that’s not a difference as well.

I think that there’s a bigger difference between the moisturizing lotion in the USA and moisturizing lotion in Europe, but these two moisturizing creams are very similar.

It’s not a huge difference but still, because ceramides are listed higher in the USA version. Again it could be that the USA version is better, more moisturizing, rich in texture, etc.

Final Verdict

With regards to the EU version, they’re very similar. There’s not much of a difference between them except that moisturizing lotion is a little bit more lightweight and the cream is a little bit thicker but overall the effect is very similar. They’re not overly occlusive. Both of them are very lightweight moisturizers, so I find the claims misleading on both of them and I think that I would personally recommend them to people who have normal skin.

Even oily skin types can try these creams out because of how lightweight they are. I would recommend them to normal and oily skin types and if not, if you’re using retinoids and you need a super lightweight base for your retinoid cream then you can use these two.

Me and most of us like that they don’t have fragrances and that they are suitable for sensitive skin. I just wish that they were more moisturizing. That’s it.

But that does not have to be a problem. They’re just not a good fit for me and my skin but I’m sure that these two products will be a great fit for anyone who has normal skin or oily skin and is looking for a very lightweight moisturizer.
