Causes and treatments: All about skin tags

Skin tags are painless moles type noncancerous growth on the skin. These are harmless pieces of skin connected in a small thin stalk known as the peduncle. They are a common issue in both men and women – and after the 50s, there are more chances of having these on your skin. These can appear on any part of the body, but few particular areas of their growth are thighs, eyelids, armpits, groin, neck, and under the area of breasts. In this article, you will know skin tag causes, treatments and ways of how to remove skin tags – so let’s get started:

Identifying skin tag:

Not all skin growths are tags for the skin; there can be cancerous growths that may look like tags. These are not like any other moles and developments, and they typically hang off the skin. Mostly these tags are small and not more than 2 millimeters in size. These can even be smooth and round and some may be wrinkly or resemble threadlike rice grain.

These are flesh-colored skin growths. The color can be darker than skin color due to many reasons like hyper-pigmentation. Sometimes skin tags became twisted because of a lack of blood flow into them. Skin tags and moles do not cause any pain. You can recognize the difference between cancerous growth and tags by:

  • Moles and skin tags do not cause any pain; if you are having pain on a particular skin tag, consult your doctor.
  • If skin growth is more like a bump or there is a sign of swelling and redness around the particular development, then it is time to consult a doctor as it can be cancerous.
Factors to consider:

Skin tags do not occur for some specific reasons, but you may be more prone to these tags if:

  • You are pregnant,
  • You are overweight
  • Have family members with a skin tag history
  • Patient of insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes
  • Have HPV.

Skin growths can be cancerous, but no skin tag becomes cancerous. There are chances of irritation when tags rub with skin, clothes, and jewelry. Shave with caution around tags – although shaving them might not cause permanent damage, it might cause bleeding and pain.

If you find something unusual or there is too much growth of tags around the skin, then consult a family doctor or dermatologist. They might run few tests or perform a biopsy if there are any doubts.

Skin tag causes:

What exactly causes skin tag is still not defined. These show up in skin folds, and there are numbers which might cause them. These tags contain blood vessels and collagen that surrounds the upper skin layer.

Studies and observations have been done in the last few years, and according to the results, these few can be a reason for skin tag occurrences:

HPV (Human Papillomavirus):

A few years back in 2008 suggested that HPV can be the reason for skin tag development. Around 37 skin tags were analyzed from various body parts, and according to the results, 50% of people had HPV in their DNA.

A study was conducted in 2010 among type 2 diabetes patients who are insulin resistant and prediabetes. The study suggested that diabetes can be the cause of skin tags. Diabetic patients’ bodies cannot absorb glucose properly from blood, and that might cause a considerable body mass index and high triglycerides.

Hormonal Changes:

For some people, these tags are typical side effects of pregnancy – because pregnancy causes weight gain and hormonal changes. In few cases, people with hormonal imbalance and endocrine problems get more skin tags compared to others.

Genetic Causes:

The tags can be related to genetics – those having more family members with skin tags are prone to get them too. In contrast, skin tags are not cancerous and not contagious at all.

How to remove skin tags naturally:

Whether the tags are contagious or cancerous or not – sometimes they look ugly. Moreover, too many tags also do not feel right. There are several ways to remove skin tags, both medical and natural. Here I’ll tell you about few natural ways to remove skin tags.

Apple cider vinegar:

A little study has been done on apple cider vinegar characteristics to remove skin tags. It is a simple method that does not require much of your effort. You may need:

  • Soak a cotton ball in the vinegar and fix it on a skin tag with a bandage for ten minutes. Repeat the process two or three times a day until it falls.

Make sure you do not feel any skin irritation in this process because it might be a sign of reaction. Apple cider is prone to chemical reaction so try not to use it near eyes.

Skin tag removal band:

A skin tag removal band cuts off the blood supply to these tags. Without any supply, the tags naturally wither and die off. Thus, the skin tag falls away – this process is known as ligation.

The removal patches contain medication, and when the person leaves the patch on the skin tag for few days or a week or two, the tag will fall away.

Tee Tree oil:

Nutritious oil is often used to remove a skin tag. Take few drops of oil and dip the cotton ball, now affix the ball to the tag and bandage. Leave the cotton ball on the skin tag for 10 minutes and repeat the method thrice a day. You may need to repeat the process for days or sometimes weeks until the tag falls off.

Skin tags are not a health issue until they grow at unusual places or you are having extra growth or find something different around them. Moreover, if tags are not sensitive to body parts, you can easily remove them by home remedies. Removing skin tag gives mental satisfaction, and it is better to remove them before it’s late; as the old saying goes, ‘It’s better today than tomorrow!’
